NY TIMES: A Japanese Plant Struggles to Produce a Critical Auto Part

A chain is just as strong as it's weakest link….
A modern car is a computer on wheels. The window openers, the dashboard navigation maps, the fuel injectors — these and many other operations are controlled by some of the 100 or so electronic systems in a typical car.

No wonder the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that knocked out one of the world’s leading automotive computer-chip factories struck such a severe and lasting blow to the global auto industry.

THAI VEST: Thai auto output to be cut by 150,000 units

Thailand’s vehicle output from April through June could be slashed by as many as 150,000 units, leading to a Bt75billion loss in revenue, as all carmakers have to run at half capacity because of the disruption in the supply of parts from Japan.
Wallop Tiasiri, director of the Thai Automotive Institute, said the revenue loss was based on the average carprice estimate of Bt500,000 a unit, and this would be shared by carmakers and local parts suppliers.

THE NATION: Somboon slahes production over crisis in Japan

Somboon Advance Technology (SAT), a leading local automotive-parts manufacturer, said yesterday that it had reduced production by 35 per cent as Japanese carmakers had cut their orders significantly. The tsunami in Japan last month has had a severe impact on carmakers because of a major shortage of components.

BANGKOK POST: Automakers warn of slow delivery

Slowdown in Toyota car output up to 70% coming….

Major carmakers continue receiving orders from customers although they are facing production trouble caused by tight supply of electronic parts from Japan.

Car output in Thailand will drop by 50% on average until June as stocks of major parts of carmakers are going to run out soon.

The reduced output is expected to force some manufacturers to deny accepting orders or delay car deliveries until normal production resumes.Industry sources said Toyota Motor Thailand was still accepting orders even though its car output would be cut by 70% until early June.

With the latest technology news at their fingertips, IT professionals can prepare impressive selling points. Reading technology guides regularly will keep you inspired and reminded of possibilities in your sector as an IT or engineering professional. Some sources of technology news charge monthly or annual membership. These are usually the ones that reveal technology trends from surveys or technology releases long before they come out on the mainstream media. They need to return their money back for the research and investigative journalism.

Other sources of information are Institutes and standards authorities. They may or may not charge for membership. However, faster information can be gotten from tech news blogs. They give the word on the streets and provide solutions whenever unorthodox methods are called for. Even though references and citations are not common in any technology blog, mistakes are often corrected by other participants. Newspapers do not feature much on technology while magazines tend to be oriented on consumerism. Technology how tos articles featured online are the only resort for those who need practical solutions.

Of course copying from a review on the internet is a no-no. Just imagine if your clientele or management team already saw the article you borrowed from. Come up with your own line material but with a solid foundation. It's easy after going through several technology guides. Combining several inputs from technology articles equals a new intriguing outlook. Getting ahead in your career or tech business may be hinged on your ability to keep up with technology. Competitors are always at your heels and clients keep demanding for more technology. Being a regular visitor of tech blogs can be very helpful.

At the office, a project team leader can setup sharing of information resources populated from technology guides. This keeps team members updated and gives them resource reference through database access in the intranet. Keeping project running on schedule means keeping people informed only with the right information. So it is not best for everyone to indulge in their own research. However for projects implemented by team members across the globe, meetings are held as part of a private technology blog. This may be implemented by setting up a corporate portal where expertise will be shared enlightening all key participants.

Troubleshooting of software is a common topic in tech blogs - it is vendor and task specific. Whenever a user cannot find a configuration in the default help files, he may try searching on a tech news blog. The problem may be unique and unusual and therefore may require a radically different approach. Sometimes the inquiry is about a product whose manual is in a foreign language. The international community is there to help in such cases. There are many software developers out there who have come up with software patches for common compatibility glitches. The description and links to their products are usually included in technology articles.

Nano launch delayed until after first-time car scheme

Tata Motors will delay selling the Nano in Thailand until after the first-time car buyer programme expires, said an industry source.

The introduction of the Nano _ by some estimates the world's cheapest car _ was previously set for early this year but was postponed in light of the influx of eco-cars being offered by Japanese carmakers in Thailand.

The first-time car buyer programme, which rebates taxes paid by first-time buyers purchasing certain types of automobiles, further weakened the competitive position of the Nano.

7 Reasons to Create a Household Technology Plan

7 Reasons to Create a Household Technology Plan http://sobsaveourbloggs.blogspot.com/One thing that I have noticed when I have conversations with parents about the use of technology in their homes is there is usually not a written plan. Even in instances where technology use and planning has been discussed in the home, it usually consists of parents directing their children on what not to do. I believe much of our direction for technology with our children should be about what they can do with it.

Developing a written plan can offer the following benefits:
Accomplishing Goals - If you actually write down some of the technology goals you have, you can actually reach them. If you're not writing an technology goals, you probably haven't set any. A technology goal could be as simple as "learn to use Twitter" or it could be something more difficult like "learn to program in PHP". The key is to set the goals and then move toward reaching them.

Saving Money - When you create a technology plan, you can assess what you have, what you need, and what you want to have. In many cases, the average person underestimates how many technology devices and gadgets they have in their home or at their disposal to use. When you make a plan, you can save money by planning for replacements and maintenance

Avoiding Arguments - One of the lessons my wife and I were taught in marriage counseling was to set clear expectations and communicate about them from the beginning. This can also apply to using technology. If you let technology use be self-governed by each member of your family, it can cause arguments or disagreements because the rules have not been set. By establishing who can use it, and when, where, and why they can use technology, everyone can be on the same page

Learning - As technology is embraced and used responsibly, it can be a great means of learning about more technology and nearly any subject you can imagine. Technology has allowed people in different geographic locations to communicate and to experience activities at the same time. This is a great way to facilitate learning.

Protecting Family Members - The most popular aspect of technology that I'm asked about is internet safety. Though much of the solutions involve installing filters and virus protection, much of it involves controlling the environment as well. If you include guidelines for use in your plan, you can protect yourself and your children from being exposed to MOST inappropriate content.

Discovering Resources - When using technology as an educational resource, you are very easily capable of discovering other resources that may be useful to you. The connectedness of the web allows you to locate books, recordings, videos, websites, organizations, and other resources any time.

Meeting People- If we choose to be, we can connect with people nearly anywhere in the world with technology. This can provide us with valuable experiences and allow us to create experiences for the people we meet. It's very possible to meet people with similar interests in your city or town, but you can also connect with people in different states, or even different countries.

Will Technology Eventually Supersede Nature?

Will Technology Eventually Supersede Nature? Technology has made life easier and enjoyable. The communication world has continued bringing cell phones and gadgets that combine a variety of important activities together. The transport industry recently comprises fast airplanes, automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles and many other powerful machines. Instead of sending letters, which used to take long, e-mails, Skype, Google talk, yahoo messenger, Facebook, and many live-chat mechanisms have taken communication to another level. At the moment, technological advancements have continued in areas of computers, business, medicine, aviation, food processing and others. But, how does nature fare when technology is in action? Will technology eventually supersede nature?

The Power of technology Vs nature

When war breaks out, advanced weapons take lives, destroy buildings and cause extensive damage. During such wars, the use of technology is usually the number-one option in fighting back or getting involved physically. Such cases make reliance on nature suicidal. In addition, talking to someone who is in a different town, or country, requires the use of technology. This is because the voice, in its natural state, can not travel such long distances and neither can the ear pick sounds from such remote locations. The use of technology can even make such people visible while communicating with them.

When Nature Strikes, How Does Technology Respond?

As the foregoing suggests, it is very easy to state that technology can eventually supersede nature. However, when natural forces strike, how does technology fair? When a tsunami swept across Indonesia, the world wanted to come to the aid of the victims in that country. All the developments in technology could not save the innocent lives, and prevent the extensive damage that ensued! As a result, many lives were lost, and the only thing technology did was pick up the ashes.

What about volcanoes? When scientists gather ample evidence that a volcano is about to erupt, the most reasonable, and loving, step governments take is to evacuate the residents in time. Similarly, when a tornado - or highly destructive wind - strikes, technology only detects the signs of its timing and severity. Such data helps the authorities in preparing for a timely evacuation campaign. The list can go on, but the fact is that, when the forces of nature act, technology is too irrelevant to respond back. It can only detect.

Will technology supersede nature?

With such evidence, it is clear that technology will continue making life easier, enjoyable and beautiful in many ways. But it has no power to take over nature. The many decades, centuries, and millenniums already spent in researching and discovering the wonders of nature attest to this fact. That is why, instead of learning about planets and galaxies created by scientists, we will continue hearing about the new planets being discovered; the amazing nature of the galaxies and complex nature of creation. In appreciating such wonders of nature bio-mimicry has come up with many designs that acknowledge the supremacy of nature. Conclusively, science, and technology at large, will continue developing, but nature will remain respected.

Emissions may dictate fuel levies

The Excise Department is considering an overhaul of tax rates for petroleum based on carbon dioxide emissions.

Tax rates for petroleum products are currently set based on product type, with petrol charged a tax of seven baht per litre, gasohol 6.30 baht and diesel 5.31 baht per litre. Taxes are collected directly from refineries.

But a Finance Ministry official said the tax structure could be changed to be based on carbon emissions, similar to a proposed new tax structure for automobiles.

Thailand's LPG, CNG and gasoil demand soars, led by subsidies

Thailand's consumption of LPG, CNG and gasoil are soaring led by the politically-motivated subsidy scheme which insulates consumers from rising prices, encouraging usage.

Demand for CNG, commonly known as natural gas for vehicles or NGV in Thailand and used as an alternative automotive fuel, surged in January by 34.5% over the same period last year to 207,000 Mcf/d, mirroring the continuation of the trend from the whole of 2010 when consumption jumped 26.8% to 181,000 Mcf/d.

Ten Things to Consider When Looking for a Technology Consultant

Ten Things to Consider When Looking for a Technology ConsultantPreferably the person providing the technology consulting will be what is called a "turnkey consultant" or "turnkey provider". That means whatever is thrown at them they take care of, from virus removal to time clock installations. It's sort of like a general contractor for a technology. They may handle 90% of whatever is needed themselves, but they will delegate tasks that they are not experts at to true specialized professionals. If a technology consultant turns down helping with fields of technology completely, or they try to handle everything from phone systems to servers it could be a sign that they are either too inexperienced to have proper relations with others in their field, or overreaching their experience for the money. Both are equally dangerous to the consumer.

A computer consultant needs to have insurance. Don't just ask, ask for a copy of the policy. If they are going to be working around anything very expensive it might be a good idea to be listed as an additional insured on their insurance. Insurance is inexpensive for a technology professional, so not having it may mean that the consultant doesn't take his work seriously. Also, quite a bit of technology delves into construction work, especially cabling. One wrong move with a drywall saw white mounting a display, and contractor insurance is the difference between an insurance claim, and bankruptcy.

If the technology consultant runs a cable make sure that they use a cable certifier and provide the results. Cable certifiers are not cheap, but certified cable can mean the difference between frustration or wonderful results.

Make sure that the technology professional guarantees their work. That may seem like a no-brainer, but most computer repair shops have no guarantee whatsoever. Some computer repair companies remove a virus from a PC and it shows back up three days later leaving the consumer in the same place with a lighter wallet.

Make sure the technology consultant knows were all of the important data is, and has a good solution to do on-site quick backup and restores, and remote backup for disaster recovery. Make sure that there off-site backup is through reputable data center such as Amazon S3, or rack space, and not at their office which could get hit by the same tornado as the office that they are supposed to be protecting.

Think twice about getting a computer consultant that is also a retailer. The old saying goes "When you're a hammer everything looks like a nail." When a consultant is a retailer every problem looks like a chance to sell expensive hardware. Some retailers have really great technology consultants working for them, or they are excellent technology consultants themselves. The danger is always that there is a conflict of interest when someone recommends a product that they have a vested interest in getting rid of.

Make sure that the technology consultant provides an encrypted file with all of the logins and passwords. Nothing is worse than firing a technology consultant, only to find out that whoever is hired to replace them has to spend 20 to 40 hours reconfiguring everything in the office and resetting all of the passwords in the organization because the previous IT consultant is mad that they got fired.

Make sure that the invoices you get have a good breakdown on them. Understand that the technology consultant must charge a markup on hardware, software, and services or they will go out of business. However it does not mean that they should be charging $50 for something they purchased for a dollar. They probably won't if they have to give a good breakdown on the invoice.

Consider doing work with a consultant that gives terms such as 15 or 30 days. It is much easier to get warranty work rectified by your computer consultant when you are not in default on your account, but have also still not paid your bill.

Make sure to ask for referrals. When talking to the referral ask them how they found the technology consultant (make sure it is not a family member) and ask them for an example of a problem and how it was overcome. Every technology consultant and consumer has problems at some point. The difference between a good technology consultant and bad consulting is how they handle those problems when they arise.

PLASTIC NEWS: Auto suppliers worry about domino effect

North American suppliers -- even those that appear to have little exposure to Japan’s automakers or suppliers -- are poring over contingency plans and preparing to take a hit.

A survey by the Original Equipment Suppliers Association of its members conducted March 21-31 and released last week found that almost half of the North American respondents already have had production schedules reduced as a result of the earthquake. Two-thirds of those who haven’t seen schedules cut yet said they expect to see output reductions over the next month and a half.

BANGKOK POST: Nissan eyes another eco-car in Thailand

The addition of the new model would take production of eco-cars at the NISSAN Thai plant to about 100,000 units

Nissan Motor, Japan's second-largest automaker, wants to produce its latest eco-car in Thailand after its initial eco-car, the Nissan March.

Once the new model's production starts, Nissan's output of eco-cars here will top 100,000 units this year, with an aim to export the new model back home, said an executive at Nissan's Thai unit.

Global Automotive Component Outsourcing Market to Reach $1.09 Trillion by 2017

Good news – I think Thailand needs to get into full bore "business development" mode.

GIA announces the release of a comprehensive global report on automotive component outsourcing market. Although the prolonged severity of the economic slowdown and depressed automotive industry have elicited decline in revenue for automotive component outsourcing in the recent years, the market nevertheless is expected to recover poise in the short to medium term period to reach $1.09 trillion by 2017. Growth in the market will be especially driven by increase in automobile production as a result of post recession resurgence in consumer demand for new cars and scheduled development and roll out of new feature-rich vehicle models. Robust growth prospects in Asia-pacific also augur well for the market.
